Impact
The early stages of a dog’s life can go by so quickly that many owners find it difficult to capture every significant moments of their puppy’s development. Furthermore, remote research for puppy cognition is extremely high effort to conduct and difficult to maintain participant engagement.
Pawgress, a multifuncatinal dog cognition platform, was designed through extensive qualitative interiews, quantitative research, and thematic analysis to solve these critical problems for the canine researchers at the University of St Andrews PAWS Lab.

Pain Points
The early stages of a dog’s life can go by so quickly that many owners find it difficult to capture every significant moments of their puppy’s development.
The canine development experts at University of St Andrews PAWS Lab, well aware of this common problem, partnered with the HCI department to create Pawgress, the multifuncatinal dog cognition platform.
Fleeting Moments
Users found the hamburger menu unorganized, labels and icons unclear, making it hard to find features and start tasks.
Fragmented Workflow
Users had to do manual calculations to check total balance and access transaction history since information was dispersed across multiple layers.
Falling Engagement
Lack of privacy in public environments because all financial information is immediately visible upon login.
Strategy & Solutions
Pawgress is designed to be a multifunctional platform to bridge a critical gap in dog cognition research, empower dog owners through science, help capture essential milestones, and provide further value with rewards.
Outcome
Created a unified system which creates value for both researchers and dog owners. Supported the PAWS researchers by streamlining their process for data collection and improve participant sign-ups and retention. Provided additional value for dog owners beyond study participation, which will increase motivation to engage. Next steps include prototyping and testing the Pawgress initial designs and designing the backend admin portal for researchers to manage studies.
